REGION: Brda, Slovenia
As usual, there's a lot of mystery surrounding the first place to do anything, but if this part of Europe didn't have the very first grapevines, they weren't far behind. With the perfect climate to produce grapes, Slovenia and the other Eastern Mediterranean countries are putting their hands up to get noticed. Rebula is the native grape, although it grows quite widely in neighbouring Italy too, and this is what is more commonly known as an "orange wine" - basically, a white wine that has spent time time in contact with its skins during fermentation. Often, this can add too much of a bite and tannic grip, but when handled well, as this is, it really adds amazing texture and length.
