Gillian Mann Director of Jaded Palates

Gillian Mann

Managing Director
Jaded Palates Stores

Hi, I'm Gill. I have lived, raised my family and worked on the edge of Dartmoor for over 20 years after an initial career in insurance.

My retail background is not actually in wine but food! I ran our family delicatessen for 15 years, where we prided ourselves on sourcing locally produced, artisan products with a real focus on quality and integrity.

As well as running the deli, I spent several years running an online food business. My real passion, though, comes from the face to face experience you get from meeting customers, getting to know people and being part of a community. And, being able to talk about my love of food with people who share these values was a real bonus.

Naturally, a love of food goes hand in hand with great wines and the opportunity to be part of Jaded Palates was not one to be missed! We share the same belief in sourcing great products, often from small producers who care passionately about what they make and environment they grow them in.

Like our founders, I believe that you can never know too much about wine. So I and the rest of the team work hard to continually broaden our knowledge and source new, interesting wines. The emphasis here is friendly and approachable and we'd be delighted to share this experience with you.

I believe you can never know too much in wine and although I've always loved drinking it (!) I never had the chance to learn much about it. It's incredibly easy for me to relate to people who feel intimidated by the world of wine, because I was that person not long ago! I decided to take on the challenge of studying the WSET programme, and am enthralled by the journey I began. There isn't much I now don't know about the wines we stock – we sample very regularly to make sure we are all learning something new every day.

john lace

shop manager, ashburton

Born and raised in West Cumbria, I came to Devon in 1987 and just forgot to go home!

I sort of stumbled into retail - a pet shop in Paignton, where I discovered that I thoroughly enjoy the friendly, personal service that would become pivotal to me being able to enjoy my work today.

I worked in Best Cellars Wine Merchant's for 19 years and when Gill asked if I would like to stay on and be part of the Jaded Palates team it was a no brainer!

Aside from drinking the odd cheeky bottle of red (!), those of you that know me know that I dabble in a spot of woodturning and my wife Sarah and I have three fabulous children.

BRIAN RENWICK

co-FOUNDER & CHAIRMAN

I was brought up in North Tawton but since I was 18, I have lived and worked in Libya, France, Bahrain, the Philippines and for the last 35 years or so in Hong Kong and China to which I return frequently for business. I now live in Lustleigh, in the cottage my parents bought in 1979. I am a Human Resources professional but even more a business entrepreneur. So, when Ian, my youngest son, asked me to help him found Jaded Palates, I was delighted to become the Company’s Chairman.

Our stores in Chagford and Ashburton have quickly established themselves as essential parts of the scenery in mid-Devon and we are very proud of the rapid progress we have made. But there is always more to be done and Gill Mann and I are determined to grow the business by capitalising on the great niche we have achieved in good value wines and spirits.

I do hope you will look carefully at what we have to offer and give our wines a try. We aim to hit the sweet spot of excellence at reasonable prices. We deliver to all parts of the UK – not just Devon. We are delighted to answer your questions at any time.

Every bottle, hand picked for you to enjoy
