REGION: King Valley, Victoria
Australia has very much graduated from your classic Barossa Shiraz and SE Australia Chardonnay. The broadly hospitable climate really allows them to experiment. As the terroirs are still being understood, the very best winemakers are now planting different and more unusual varieties to see what works and how it expresses itself. Great Italian varieties like Sangiovese and Nebbiolo are becoming popular, as are Spanish ones. This isn't really Spanish, but Basque, from that very Northern corner of the country. And it's a very unusual one: wonderfully mouth-filling and full, yet tangy and, perhaps disconcerting to some, spritzy. It's fabulous.
