INFO: Carignan really can be quite a boring wine. When the vines are young, it's often used in blends in the most basic of Languedoc and Southern France wines to bulk out the colour and add a bit of body. Once the vines get beyond about 30 or 40 years old though, it changes completely. It produces a lot less fruit, meaning the flavours are concentrated. It's still not highly regarded, which is why it's often quite cheap. For us, this means it's often fantastic value.
